Boating

The Peace River and the Myakka River converge into Charlotte Harbor providing a variety of simply beautiful unspoiled boating.  Punta Gorda, Florida is located approximately 17 miles by water from the Gulf of Mexico.  The depth in the majority of the bay is 10-12 feet with generally 5 feet entering most channels.  The sandbars tend to move around a little and typically get shallow in a hurry!  We experience an average tide swing of approximately 2 feet.

What you will see and do on excursions by boat, your own or by charter, can vary greatly depending on your compass heading.  Up river the shore line is much like it was when I was a boy- untouched.  Down stream, we are unspoiled by most standards with wonderful beaches, anchorages and funky restaurants.  Have a current navigation chart on board and explore (and please protect) the beauty of our greatest treasure!

Fishing
You have arrived!!!  The Home of the Silver King Tarpon is a sight to behold.  The Tarpon move into our bay by the thousands possibly more in May.  These gorgeous creatures have sparkling shiny sides with green backs and weigh upward to 200 pounds.  Large schools roll right beside your boat in the Boca Grande pass, and most of the time will not take your bait while taunting you.  The sight of this phenomenon is worth a thousand words.  Your depth recorder may not record the correct depth due to the large schools of fish beneath your boat.

In what we call the back water (depths of 1 to 3 feet), the sport is to catch Snook, Redfish, Trout, and Snapper.  Personally, I favor the back country since I can go out in almost any weather and the landscape is just simply beautiful.  I am a catch & release fisherman; thus, Joy and I wind up grilling chicken rather than my catch!
